Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee provides all members at each of our locations the opportunity to participate in high-quality arts programs led by trained artists and staff members. The programs develop creative skills and act as a positive form of self-expression.
While all members are exposed to arts programming, the Clubs gives further professional and career-building opportunities to youth who demonstrate interest and talent. We believe it is critical that members are exposed to the vibrant arts community within our community and understand they can have a real future in the arts – as artists, performers or patrons.
Thanks in large part to the Clubs’ amazing partners in the arts community, we were excited to provide Arts Immersion week to members as a means to gain valuable exposure to different disciplines within the field.
The partners that participated in Art Immersion week were Milwaukee Ballet and Milwaukee Repertory Theater. Milwaukee Ballet exposed Club members to beginner’s ballet, and the Milwaukee Rep used theater games to teach youth the importance of telling their story in a positive, healthy fashion.
The arts community has also been generous in offering Club families opportunities to engage in the arts in ways they otherwise might not be able to. Last year, the Milwaukee Rep donated over 100 tickets for our families to see the play “A Christmas Carol.” This spring, the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra held a family night at the Don & Sallie Davis Boys & Girls Club, where families were treated to a special performance. Before the event, our members and families enjoyed an “Instrument Petting Zoo” and learned how to compose music. First Stage Theater held drama clubs and offered tickets to productions, while the Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra provided assemblies within the Clubs, bucket drumming performances, and a steel band performance. Our friends at the Florentine Opera Company even visited our Davis Club, giving our youth an up-close look at live opera performance. The Marcus Center for The Performing Arts, Milwaukee Art Museum and Wisconsin Conservatory of Music also graciously provide engagement opportunities for members and their families. We’ve also been proud to team up for the annual Milwaukee Film Festival in partnership with Milwaukee Film as community partners for the past several years.
As family engagement and hands-on opportunities continue to be important parts of Boys & Girls Clubs programming, we are grateful for our amazing partners within the arts community. Being A Club for Every Kid means relying on our partners to help us bring the inner “artist” out of our youth!
